HAPPY FESTIVUS !!!!!!!

Fall is almost upon us and it leaves me wondering where did the sunshine go? Well, I know between the Summer events and on-coming Fall and Winter projects, it must have quietly slid away as I toiled in front of this computer organizing, e-blasting, and networking. Another warm season has escaped from me without as much as a pool dip, ocean glance, or foot on the boardwalk; yet, I don't mind.
My Little Lady Tallis weathered the storm with me, daily, as we rode to meet clients, typed up proposals (we both staring blankly at a computer screen, at times) and yelled at each other from opposite sides of my office. Well, not really yelled. She probably was cursing me out in baby talk while I sat quietly and listened to her complaints and reasoning. Either way, it TRULY was a good Summer, so, although, it may seem as though I have missed out on alot of experiences, I don't feel I have missed out on anything at all...

An Early Overview of Google+ as a Content Marketing Platform by Allison Midori

About Allison Midori Reilly:

Allison Midori Reilly is a freelance writer based in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. In her four years professional writing and editing experience, she’s been published in over a dozen print and online publications, such as Anthill Magazine, American City & County, Ideabing, Transport Topics and St. Louis Magazine. Writing niches include politics, and logistics.

Rex Hammock of Hammock Inc. released his e-brief (free download) evaluating Google+ as a potential content marketing platform and “business” social network. Google+, if you haven’t yet heard, is Google’s new social network, which offers a variety of features that would be useful to conducting business. Hammock outlines how Google+ is different from other social networks, and what that could mean to small business.

Hammock said in the e-brief that Google+ could really position itself by focusing on the aspects of social networking that appeal to business executives. Facebook Pages, for example, has never done well for business-to-business services, and Facebook has that association as a place to goof off rather than conduct business. However, Google+ still isn’t Facebook, which may not necessarily be a good thing.

Hammock also said that social networking for business should mean increasing productivity and efficiency. Google+ has the ability to do that, especially with features like Sparks and Hangouts (really don’t like that name) that could be used to make business more productive and more efficient. For those who want to utilize social media for business purposes, Google+ could cut into that time that’s now split among Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Hammock also remarked on an early drawback for Google+ and business users: no support for Google Apps for Business. Granted, Google announced that Google+ will have business pages before the end of the year, but it’s not the same as integrated with all those wonderful apps. This lack of of support also initially alienates the employees at three million companies who have Gmail accounts, but not the type that works for Google+.

To conclude, Hammock offered six predictions for Google+. To learn more about Google+ as a business tool, please feel free to download the e-brief at the top.

Google+ will be a big success as a business-oriented product – even an enterprise employee-to-employee product.
Google+ will attract adult consumers who think having a Facebook account is ridiculous.
Google+ won’t have much impact on Twitter or LinkedIn.
Google+ is a bigger threat to Facebook than any other social networking player, but more so in the business-to-business area than in the consumer area.
Google+ will be a big hit with small businesses.
Google+ has the opportunity of being the most open social network if it allows users to be part of the Google+ network using their own identities, not the identities that Google owns and controls.

MY FAVORITE QUOTES OF THE MONTH

Can YOU believe Summer is ALMOST over already? It seems like we have only just begun... Yet, I already am seeing school supplies, Halloween costumes, and winter clothing being displayed. I guess Summer, like all good things, has to come to an end eventually. Well, if you're in places like Texas where it has been over 100 degrees for weeks you, actually, are happy that there is an end in sight.

Either way, I am dedicating this section to some of my favorite quotes of the month. Many of the topics in question may be obvious, while others may leave you scratching your head and saying, "Huh?" I am hoping that whatever the case may be, you enjoy these QUOTES of the SUMMER of 2011!

"I was at a business event and someone exclaimed, " I KNEW you, a year ago, before I actually KNEW you!" "Now, THAT'S social media done right!"

"Major decisions have to be made and major projects are coming up. Today, I introduced people/created possible opportunities for others. Tomorrow, I give people the best service and deliver quality product. But, NOW, I am going home to spend time with my Little Lady, TALLIS, and then I DANCE! I'm a DADDY, not DEAD."

‎"Good decisions come from experience, experience often comes from bad decisions."
- The Mechanic

"Nothing is guaranteed, but sometimes you have to proceed outside of the box to progress into the future." ("Nothing ventured, nothing gained.")

Philadelphia Mayor blasts violent flash mobs: "On an up note, there seems to be some leaders with some organizational skills orchestrating these mobs. If only they could use this talent for good...

Polygamist leader Jeffs gets life in prison: "He can still practice polygamy, just not the way he is used to...."

"Everyone says people need to pull themselves up by their OWN bootstraps, but what do they do when they don't have any boots? These occurrences are happening ALL OVER THE WORLD, literally. Check your newspapers and internet. It's easy to say what YOU would do when faced with hunger, poverty, and mistreatment until you actually experience it. The "powers that be" call it RIOTING, those on the "other" side call it civil disobedience." Is there any excuse for the looting and destruction? No. But there, also, has been no excuse for the mistreatment of the thousands of impoverished people in London and beyond; and THIS has been occurring LONG before the riots began. And as for those who say this will happen in AMERICA, I am unsure about this. We haven't had a good riot since the 60's and 70's and now people are too busy "hacking" and "googling" to care about REALITY. Maybe a good riot would shake things up a bit in the U.S. and cause alot of people to focus on what is TRULY important..."

"Unfortunately, the timing of this strike is bad. Especially with unemployment, job loss, and wage lowering practices. It will be very hard to get the public to stand behind them in this situation. In fact, many may be saying, "Power to the people!" while simultaneously, asking where the Human Resources office is so they can apply for THEIR jobs..."

GETTING ON YOUR THE SOAP BOX....

Allentown Targets Activists

by Riley Schillaci

On July 23, 2011, at approximately 11:45am, I was setting up to play my guitar outside of Green Deli, On Hamilton Street in Allentown, as I have been doing for the past month, when I was approached by two Allentown police officers on bicycles. I was told that I could not play guitar and ask for money. I explained that I was “busking” which is a performance art, in which the artist performs, and appreciative public tip if they see fit. Busking does not approach people and ask or demand money. I have been given permission by the owners of Green Deli, Lee and his wife, to play guitar outside of their store. Lee himself often tips me. I also use this time to bring awareness to the current issue of eminent domain abuse in Allentown, pertaining to the city’s plans to build a hockey arena with public funds, and force stores like Green Deli, out of the neighborhood. I was told that I could play there by the two police officers, but that I could not ask for money. Ever the cocky one, I got into it with the po-po. After arguing with the officers, I stood against the window with my arms crossed and told them that I was sick of the way they were treating the poor in Allentown, and that I had permission from the store owners to be there. I pointed out that they had ridden past me numerous times and never said anything. I was threatened with arrest, and continued trying to argue my point. I finally gave in and started packing up, but did tell the officers to go fuck themselves as I was putting my guitar back in the case. They officers jumped off of the bicycles, and I stood against the window again, when one officer tried to cuff me, I stiffened m y arms and said I would leave, he continued trying to handcuff me and although I never laid a hand on him, he threatened to tase me. I am a 5’3, 140 lb woman, overpowering me should not require a taser.

In the end, I was brought downtown and given two citations. One for doing business without a license, and another for disturbing the peace/publicly swearing.
Swearing in public in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is legal, even if you swear at an officer of the law. The American Civil Liberties Union fought this in 2006, and won. It is now deemed unconstitutional to cite or arrest anyone in PA for publicly swearing, as it impede on their freedom of speech. I have been in contact with the ACLU, and they provided me a letter for the judge, stating why I cannot be cited for swearing.

I believe that I was targeted because I had large fliers, protesting the building of the Hockey Arena. I was never harassed when I had small fliers that were not as prominently displayed as the new larger fliers.

Two weeks later, I was once again playing in front of the deli, and not asking for money when I looked up and saw Officer C. Weiss, stopped in front of me. “You've got to be kidding me.”, he said. I reminded him that I had been told on the 19th that I could play here but not for money. My guitar case was tucked away in a corners, I had no sign, and just had the fliers on crate. He insisted that they never said I could play there, just not for money. He eventually went away (or so I thought), but I then noticed him on the corner kitty corner from me, watching me like a hawk for a good 30 minutes. A few hours later Officer Weiss stopped me on the sidewalk, because apparently he had been looking for me. He corrected himself and said that Yes, I was allowed to play guitar outside of the deli, but then tried to show me an ordinance against handing out literature on Hamilton Street. I researched the ordinances, and found that TITLE SEVEN - Parks and Hamilton Street Regulations, PROHIBITED USES section 961.14 part A states that Distribution of commercial handbills unless part of a special event or activity, is prohibited. Political and religious literature are NOT commercial. Apparently the police do not know how to interpret laws

John Poteck and I also witnessed Officer Danny Miller tearing down our fliers. While Officer Miller was following the law by tearing down the fliers (posting fliers on Hamilton Street is illegal), he failed to remove any of the other fliers put up by other organizations. The rest of the fliers were removed a few days later.

I feel safe in saying at this point that YES, individuals and businesses that speak out against eminent domain abuse and the building of arena, are being targeted by Allentown law enforcement officers. This is both bad and good. It is obviously negative in that it is an attack on our first amendment right to freedom of speech. By targeting us, the city has confirmed that we are indeed a threat to the arena project. If they thought that we were harmless and inconsequential, they would ignore us.

Riley was recently featured on America's Got Talent, as a sword swallower. Riley currently resides in Allentown PA, and works in Whitehall.

3 P's OF PERFECTION

I am no economist, but if I had to give a name for the past 5-6 years economically, I would call it an economic ice age. Just as the great woolly mammoth found its way to extinction, some of the great business that roamed the earth found themselves with the same fate. The size of these great beast may have been their only set back as times and climates were changing.

During this time period there were other animals that were able to weather the storm and severe changes but are extinct now. These animals were able to adapt to the now harsh climates and survive; however, they are not around any longer because the climate changed once again. Just as some banks and larger businesses, but, because of the changes in regulations and tightening of the pockets they too found themselves on the other side of extinction. Adaptation is good when it comes to handling the immediate pressures of the time.

Many of animals made it through these harsh climate times because they were not afraid of adaptation. Rather, they took adaptation a little further and they Evolved. If you want your company to weather this economic ice age you will need to evolve your business. It is not always survival of the fittest, but it is survival of the smartest. The backbone of our economy has never been big business although they have led us to be so. The fuel that runs this economy is the small mom and pop stores and such. The reason for the death of a majority of these businesses is the failure to adapt. Or they spent much of their time instinctually, migrating to the next best thing and they have forgotten who they were.

There are 3 main things you can do to help your business weather this economic climate;

1. Plan- I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this saying “Failing to plan is to plan to fail”. But it is so true, a good plan is like business GPS. It will help guide your company through rough times. Some pitfalls cannot be averted, but if you have a plan you will have the focus to get back on track.
2. Preparation- Every great chef takes time to gather ingredients and instruments for a great tasting meal that he or she makes. Gathering up the resources is a very important key to insuring your company will evolve in these ever changing climates. Preparations will assist you further when it comes to focus and direction. You can have the GPS on and running and still just be sitting in the car. If you forgot to put gas in the car you are going nowhere.
3. Proceed- Every good journey begins with a first step. However, a lot of great plans and great resources have been wasted by lack of effort. Believe it or not this is the hardest part of insuring that you company will evolve. In order to proceed you will have to conquer fear. Both the fear of failure and the fear of success hold people back from launching new programs or a new venture. I enjoy a show called Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares. This program involves a seasoned successful chef and a dying restaurant. The owners call him for desperate needed help to turn their business around because they KNOW the help is needed. Gordon Ramsey comes and assesses the problems and finds adequate solutions. Sometimes it is a complete overhaul of what they are doing and other times just simple things that they lost focus on. To some he says go back to the way that you used to do business and to others, stop, you are doing too much. No matter what the reason, the greatest opposition to the process is when it comes to change. When it comes insuring that your company Evolves, you cannot allow fear of change to hold you back. If you are willing to stay in that place, you’re willing to meet the certain death of your business.

The need to evolve is great in this economic ice age. There are thousands of businesses that are evolving and changing every day. Will you?

"Do you know what's worse than people who make excuses? People who make excuses for others..."

The following is an excerpt from a "social media situation" I commented on earlier this week. It involved a friend/collaborative partner, RED of REDLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT/REDLIGHT GFX, www.thisisred.net and a local Hip Hop music critic. He made some rather harsh accusations, and whether substantiated or not, I felt a need to respond and make my point made. Once the smoke cleared, I channeled my inner Bruce Banner and felt obligated to quote, "Mr. McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." ENJOY!

"You can say ALL that you want about REDLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT and RED, because it's YOUR opinion, but the reality is that while your UN-NAMED SOURCES tell you one thing, I can substantiate the WORK that RED puts in when it comes to his videos, CD's, performances, etc. People are angry because he has a mind to work and KNOWS how to market himself and his brand. Isn't that what it's all about? Aren't we ALL trying to get ourselves "out there" to get noticed and obtain value in businesses/products/brands? Yes, I may be biased, but I can tell you that I have been there when Red performed at CRASH MANSION in NYC, I have been there at the world famous S.O.B.'s when RED spoke to signed rap artist, XV and his producer, and they not only liked his CD, "REVENGE OF THE NERDS" but asked to collaborate and do future projects; and I have been there when DEF JAM execs have asked RED to do projects for their events in Miami. The problem you and other artists have in the 610 (area code) is that you all STAY in the 610! Sure, you have a few who keep talking about overseas tours and label signings but they don't PROMOTE/MARKET, thus, all of their work (and for some, YEARS of work,) go largely unnoticed. RED does and that's why he gets awards, he gets "shine", he gets respect, he gets paid gigs, he gets clothing endorsements/sponsors, etc. He is a multi-tasker. He does videos, produces, creates websites, and creates themes/projects for himself and other 610 rappers and doesn't "hit them on the head" financially for quality work because he KNOWS what it's like to have a dream and not have the dollars. He doesn't have $5,000.00 worth of equipment and, yet, his videos are more popular than those who have movie-like quality. People actually "like" RED and he is "down" for the success of fellow artists/people. He goes hard and people KNOW this. In fact, you just wrote a 5 page investigative report in "ode to RED" so he definitely is on YOUR mind. Everyone wants to talk about "keeping it real", "putting in work", and "slanging CD's" which RED and his crew did last year at MUSIKFEST and are currently doing now. (how do you think they pay for their office/business?) This is HOW they EAT! So,whether you agree with his "tactics" or not, all is fair in love and war, and in the "rap game" you "get up until you can get on" and if you or the OTHERS don't KNOW this by now, maybe this life is NOT for you....."

"GOING SOCIAL" by A. Alatorre / DZR CONSULTING

There are many ways to market a product. Conventional marketing aims to attract customers to a product. For years people used paper or television advertisements. Everything from pamphlets to a business card could be used to market yourself. As humanity entered into the digital age, and the internet, marketing too would find a new home on an electronic based media. Marketing on the Internet is cheaper than most ways of marketing because you don't need a physical product (like a newspaper ad)to attract customers. Instead all the marketing information is supplied on websites. People could go to a website and receive advertisements on popular web-pages. As websites began popping up on the internet, so did advertisements on them.

There are many different websites out there, and some of them are social websites where people meet and discuss things. These websites were the birth of website based advertising based off information given on the website. Websites like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter have emerged to make millions of dollars off of ad revenue. These successes are easy to understand with their popularity, but why are social websites so popular to advertise on? Simple, When people are interacting with people they know, and they see something similar to what they are interested in, they are more likely to click on that ad, rather than if they were just browsing the internet. Social websites use information that people give them to aim their advertising to their interests. The more information you know about someone, the more precise you can be about advertising to them. Social media websites are so popular because of their interaction between people, and the information they can get out of people that use it. They can target specific ads to specific people based on interest. The reason marketers have their interests is because they are freely sharing it. So social media actually pays for itself in advertising (although it is a generally slower process than conventional marketing).

Since people are likely to share what they're enjoying, they're more likely to click on something similar they see on their favorite social media website. Over 25 Billion pieces of content are added on Facebook a month. There are also over 100 million people on Facebook. So marketing potential is there. It's a matter of if you are willing to invest the money and time. Twitter alone has 75% of people using third party applications. So designing an application for a social website can often make big bucks. People spend to up to 25% of time on social websites, so it's no surprise that developing a market campaign aimed at social marketing is a good idea, if you have the cash for it. 75% of small businesses have a Facebook to promote themselves. So a social media campaign is ideal for either a small business or a larger one. Lastly, companies have found success by offering special promotions on social websites. People are 40% more likely to “like” you if there is a special offer behind it. In conclusion, If you have the cash to start a social media website campaign, it will pay off over time. If you offer special offers, you are even more likely to build brand loyalty. Unlike traditional marketing, a website can be changed on the fly, and with special offers, it's more likely that someone will like your website's advertisement, than if you just post on any website. This type of marketing campaign isn't instantly gratifying, but over time may make more money than conventional marketing.

A. Alatorre - Staff Writer for Eveolution Magazine and Evomag.co

OUT LOUD !!!!

"OUT LOUD"

BY CYNTHIA RODRIGUEZ

"EMINENT DOMAIN MY ASS"

Just because something is in the constitution, doesn't make it constitutional. It's difficult for me to stay calm just writing this. Not too long ago, I was almost a victim of "eminent domain". I was devastated with just the thought of it. I've been there almost ten years. It's a little underground landmark in it's own right. I was dangerously close to the doomed area, but I just made the cut. I think the only thing that probably saved my ass was the fact that I am on the same block as the big Verizon building. And I know they're not gonna get rid of that. That'd be like tearing down PP&L to build that. Well, maybe not EXACTLY the same, but you know what I mean. I guess for once Corporate America came in handy. Only time will tell. It can still happen. It can happen to anybody. I didn't even know about this until pretty recently when I read about it in the Morning Call. Until then, I didn't even know what that term meant. Frankly, I'm surprised this kind of injustice still exists.

I am totally appalled, disgusted, and just perplexed by our city's government right now. I cannot even begin to understand how they would think that building this hockey stadium/arena would actually be good for downtown Allentown.

First of all, where are we? Canada! Nobody gives a shit about hockey around here. Since when do they think there is some HUGE hockey following in this area. I've lived in this town for over twenty years, and the only time I hear anyone talking big about hockey, (which is rare) is when they are talking about the Philadelphia Flyers. Personally, I like the N.Y Rangers, but whatever. It's hard enough to keep people interested in other local sports venues. Look what happened to the "Allentown Ambassadors" baseball team? Again, personally, I enjoyed going to the games, but they disappeared. Now, we have the Iron Pigs, who are still young, so I don't think they need any competition right now.

Second, I remember when not too long ago they were attempting to encourage people to come downtown to open up businesses, and live here, etc. What was all that about? Was that all for nothing? Yeah, thrive in downtown Allentown, even if it's just for a little while because then we're gonna take your business away from you, and tear it down. Sure, we'll compensate you. It won't be anywhere near as much as what it's probably worth, and it'll be tough to find something new, but hey, good luck with that. No matter how you slice it, that's just plain robbery. Bullying. Legal theft. Abuse of power. And if it were like, for a hospital or something, that's one thing. But for some wanna-be Madison Square Garden?

Another thing, with all the abandoned buildings in, and near center city Allentown and the dilapidated spaces around them, you would think they could put THOSE places to good use. Either use that money to renovate or to tear THEM down to make space for a stadium, but noooo, leave those to stand and rot, and tear down perfectly good buildings, homes, and businesses. Yeah, that makes sense. NOT. If we really played it smart we could do what South Bethlehem did. Look how they've resuscitated that part of town back to life. Including turning an old warehouse into one of Lehigh Valley's biggest art centers (Banana Factory). Why can't WE do things like that?

And finally, I read in the paper this project is supposed to cost I don't know how many millions of dollars so why aren't they taking that money and fixing up those pesky gas pipes that pose such a threat to us. Didn't part of Allentown blow up not too long ago because of this, killing Allentownians? Now more than usual, or more than we should normally worry about it, any time anyone in town has the slightest whiff of it we panic, feel the need to pack up, and evacuate, and the entire block gets shut down for the entire night. We're living in fear of another gas explosion but they want to build a STADIUM on top of that.

I remember when they tried to make this happen YEARS ago, and it fell through. It was around the same time I happened to be in a group exhibit at OPEN SPACE GALLERY when it was around called "BLIGHTED", about urban decay. Among the pieces I had in the show was one I kinda made last minute as a joke, and it was the one that actually ended up on the local news that night. I built a little model MOCK stadium out of junk in a dirt "sandbox" with yet more junk around it, and a paper made by the city that showed the blueprints of the pending arena which I believe they were already trying to sell tickets for even though it didn't exist yet. The little scenario included a little American flag, and little street signs that said "7th and Hamilton". On the outside, I re-did the hockey team's logo, and called it "LEHIGH VALLY X-TRUSION". In the arena, I used silver insallation for the "ice", and a little logo toy person that looked like Mayor Heydt (the then mayor). On the outside of the dirt box I painted letters that said, "ANOTHER DOWN TOWN HEYDT CRIME", and "ALL PUCKED UP".

SAVE DOWNTOWN ALLENTOWN! There are MANY things we can do with this money to truly improve center city Allentown, but I believe this is NOT one of them. Listen to the people, city government.

Some black & white masks will be provided to wear, and to keep as souvenirs.

Reveal yourself, behind your mask, at "The Black & White Show".

Art Vending opportunity for "Christmas in July"‏

Greetings Artists!

We at The Downtown Bethlehem Association have another wonderful event for YOU! This July 23rd, a Saturday, we will be having a “Christmas in July” Art Party where you are invited to come to sell and create your art on site! The event will be held from 1pm to 5pm in the beautiful courtyard of the Sun Inn, located behind The Sun Inn on Main St. (can also be accessed on Walnut St.). This event coincides with a citywide “Christmas in July” Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale. We are getting in the spirit early by decorating our vending sites with holiday decorations…..not necessary to vend Christmas items but it would be fun if you could contribute with “decorating” your space! We will have music on the Sun Inn stage, Christmas crafts for the kids, and live painting!

Vending fee is $20 for this event and is payable by Cash, Check, or Credit Card. Vendors must be on site by 12pm noon to begin set-up. Please review attached application for guidelines and agreements. Space is limited so if you are interested please reply asap to reserve your space.

Season’s Greetings!
