Good Reasons to Choose
Locally Grown

Taste
Locally grown foods, picked and eaten at the height of ripeness, are fresh and have exceptional flavor.

Nutrition
Supermarket fruits and vegetables can spend 7 - 14 days in transit, losing much of their nutrient content.  Locally grown foods are freshly picked and full of nourishment.

Health
Knowing where your food comes from and how it is grown or raised enables you to choose safe food from farmers who avoid or reduce their use of inorganic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and genetically modified seed in their operations.

Food Security
In an era of food-borne illnesses, it's important to know where your food comes from.
Support Family Farms
With each local food purchase, more of our food dollars go directly to our local farmers, ensuring that Lehigh Valley family farms continue to be economically viable.

Protect the Environment
Locally grown food doesn't have to travel far, reducing fossil fuel dependence, carbon emissions, and packing materials.

Support our Local Economy
By choosing locally grown foods over imports, every dollar spent generates an extra 65 cents to circulate in our community and create
new jobs.

Growing Future Farmers

Just outside of Emmaus, in the village of Vera Cruz, the Seed Farm is growing much more than vegetables; here, the land is also growing new farmers as part of an agricultural incubator/farming apprenticeship program.

The Seed Farm was launched in 2009 as a creative endeavor to promote sustainable agriculture and shore up the numbers of future farmers in the Lehigh Valley. The farm aims to address the main barriers to farm entry: lack of access to capital, land and training. Farmer apprentices are involved in all aspects of farm management, including crop planning, cultivation, pest and disease trouble-shooting, harvest and sales.  They also take classes through Penn State Extension.

The program is funded through a combination of produce sales, county assistance, federal and private grants, and fundraisers. Seed FarmJoin us for the annual Farm to Table Dinner taking place October 6th from 4-8 pm outdoors at the farm.  A sumptuous feast of local fare will be prepared by Chef Lee Chizmar of Bolete Restaurant.

The Seed Farm, which is working toward organic certification, sells its produce weekly at the Emmaus Farmers' Market and has various wholesale connections with restaurants and caterers in the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia areas.

Blue Marsh Market

Summer is coming to an end, but we still have a nice supply of locally grown produce at Blue Marsh Market! We will continue to have locally and organically grown kale, cabbage, new potatoes and squash. The fresh harvest of apples and a variety of pumpkins will also be arriving at the store in September. We hope that you enjoy the last days of warm weather and look forward to seeing you soon at Blue Marsh Market!

Eat local this winter! There is still time to sign up for our Winter CSA. Enjoy local, sustainably grown carrots, winter squash, cabbage, potatoes, beets and other roots along with fresh greens, radishes, scallions and more from November through April. We have pick up locations in Bethlehem, Emmaus, Brienigsville, Kutztown, and Hamburg. This season we are also partnering with other local farmers to offer our members bread, cheese and mushroom shares. See our website for more information about what we grow and to download a membership agreement.

Red Cat Farm
6113 Memorial Rd, Germansville
Freshly ground 100% whole wheat flour from our 2013 fall harvested crop of Redeemer hard red winter wheat is now available. Redeemer has an excellent protein content and is a good wheat for breadmaking, cookies, quickbreads, muffins, pancakes, scones, and breading or coating. Because our flour contains all parts of the grain, including the oils, we suggest that the flour be kept refrigerated or frozen to maintain freshness.
If you love local vegetables, fruit, dairy products, eggs and meats, why not include flour from wheat grown right here in the Lehigh Valley? We use organic type methods, no sprays, no herbicides, and grow open pollinated wheat with heirloom heritage. You may purchase the flour at The Mill in Germansville, 7130 Bake Oven Road (610-767-9650), or at the Macungie Farmers' Market, Thursdays 4-7 pm at the Macungie Memorial Park until the end of October. Wanamaker's General Store, 8888 Kings Highway, Kempton (610-756-6609) will also be carrying it beginning in mid-September .

Upcoming Lectures about Food

Veganism for Omnivores
Lafayette College, Oechsle Hall Rm 224
James E. McWilliams, author of the book "Just Food: Where Locavores Get It Wrong and How We Can Truly Eat Responsibly" will be presenting his arguments that there are myriad problems (ethical, ecological, and health-related) associated with eating animals, and that grass-fed animals are beset with many of the same problems as industrial production. He states that raising cows on grass is, ecologically speaking, more wasteful than the horrors of conventional grain-fed systems.  He is an advocate for the complete elimination of animal agriculture. Whether you agree or disagree, come on out and join what is sure to be a lively discussion!

Good Food and Clean Water:
Will Corporate Agriculture Ever Deliver?
Lafayette College, Oechsle Hall Rm 224
Michele Merkel, Co-Director of Food & Water Justice (FWJ), will discuss how FWJ brings transparency and accountability to the environmentally devastating practices of factory farming. Michele Merkel is co-director of the Food & Water Justice project, which is designed to bring a new, complementary legal approaches to the already successful community organizing, outreach and legislative work done by Food & Water Watch. Michele was formerly the Chesapeake Regional Coordinator for Waterkeeper Alliance. At Waterkeeper, Michele helped to develop and implement the campaigns of the 18 Waterkeeper programs that protect the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays.

Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) is a national program that connects consumers to fresh and delicious locally-grown foods.  Our goal at BFBL is to make it easier for consumers to find, choose, and appreciate great locally-grown foods, and to support the farmers and lands that produce them.
